Choices, Not Chains: Finding Freedom in Jesus

We all carry something — hidden burdens, quiet insecurities, habits we wish would fade. Sometimes those chains feel too heavy to shake off. But what if the truth is that we were never meant to carry them in the first place?

In Mark 5, we read about a man living among tombs, bound by chains and tormented by darkness. When Jesus arrived, everything changed. The same power that set him free is available to us today.

1. Recognising the Chains We Carry

Some chains are obvious — addiction, fear, anger, or shame. Others are harder to spot: the need for approval, unforgiveness, or secret sin. We may even carry chains that once defined us but no longer belong — holding on out of comfort or familiarity.

Yet Jesus doesn’t want us just to manage our chains; He wants to break them.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” – Galatians 5:1

2. Our Choices Create or Break Chains

The enemy rarely comes with visible chains. He comes with choices. One small compromise at a time, a habit is formed — a link forged in a chain.

But every day we also have holy choices: to forgive, to trust, to turn from sin, to spend time with God instead of scrolling through noise. Each decision either binds us or sets us free.

Freedom comes when we choose Jesus again and again — not just in moments of crisis, but in the ordinary, unseen decisions of daily life.

3. The Lion of Judah Still Breaks Chains

When Jesus spoke, demons fled. When He roars, hell trembles. The same Lion of Judah lives within every believer.

Your chains — no matter how long you’ve carried them — are not stronger than His name. In the name of Jesus, every stronghold must fall, every lie must bow, every chain must break.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:36

4. From Bound to Bold — Sharing Your Story

After Jesus freed the man in Mark 5, He told him, “Go home and tell how much the Lord has done for you.”

Freedom isn’t just for us to enjoy — it’s a story to be shared. When we speak of what Jesus has done, faith rises in others.

So today, take courage. Step out of your borrowed tomb. Drop the chains you’ve been carrying. Choose freedom — and let your life roar with the strength of the Lion of Judah.
